Start Early, Dream Big!

Welcome to the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge! This free program encourages you to read 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten. 

The concept is simple: the rewards are priceless. Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth: help build language skills, cultivate an extensive vocabulary, and improve attention spans and listening skills.

How the Challenge Works

  1.  Read with your child. 
  2. When you read a book, color or check off the picture in your reading log. Any story read to your child at daycare, preschool, the library, or a repeat read counts too. 
  3. Bring your reading log to the library so we can make a copy, and you can collect your prize!

Reading Milestones

  • Registration - TOTE BAG

  • 100 - PIN + FREE ICE CREAM

  • 200 - PIN + RUBBER DUCK

  • 300 - PIN + SLAP BRACELET

  • 400 - PIN + INK PEN

  • 500 - PIN + BOOK

  • 600 - PIN + FREE COOKIE

  • 700 - PIN + PUZZLE

  • 800 - PIN + PENCIL POUCH

  • 900 - PIN + SUNGLASSES

  • 1,000 - PIN + BOOK + MEDAL

Register for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Please submit this form with the requested information and stop by the library to pick up the registration kit for your child. You may also collect your registration kit through our drive thru window.

As part of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, the George Coon Public Library would like to ask for permission to photograph your child when they reach their milestones. These photos will be used for promotion of this program and on Facebook.
