General Circulation Policy

All citizens of Princeton and Caldwell County are encouraged to become patrons of the George Coon Public Library. This privilege extends to citizens outside of Caldwell County. We do not charge a fee for membership; however, we do require a name, address, and phone number of applicant. Minors’ applications can be filled out by a parent/guardian.

Borrowing Materials

  • Books, back issues of magazines, and audiobooks and have a standard loan period of two weeks.  
  • DVDs are available to be checked out for 48 hours.
  • As part of the Special Collection, games and puzzles can be checked out for one week. Patrons are responsible for all parts, pieces, markers, etc. that were originally included in the box or collection.
  • First time checkout for  a new patron has a limit of one item per person. After the prompt return of that item, more can be checked out.
  • There is a 25 item limit per patron.
  • The limit for DVDs is two per household for one 48 hour period.
  • There is a limit of three books on one subject in the nonfiction section.
  • Genealogy materials, rare books or reference books are restricted to in-house use only.
  • Patrons may not use another person’s account to check out items.
  • If books cannot be located in the library, the library encourages the use of our Interlibrary Loan service. If a book is located within the state, no postage cost is needed; however, if a book has to be ordered from out of state, the patron will be charged $1.50 for the book. The due date is set by the lending library, and permission will have to be made with the lending library for an extended check out time.
  • A $5.00 deposit is required to check out test books. The money is refunded when the book is returned to the library.

Overdue/Lost/Damaged Materials

  • The library does not charge overdue fines for books, DVDs, or magazines; however, patrons are expected to return items on time. After materials are two to three months overdue, a notice will be sent to patrons, reminding them of their overdues. After a second notice, if patrons still have not returned books or materials, their privileges will be revoked.
  • If any or all parts of an item of the Special Collection is lost or damaged, the patron is responsible for paying the replacement cost for the entire Special Collection item.
  • Computer usage is limited if a patron has overdue books.
  • Patrons will be required to pay for lost or damaged books. Price will depend on replacement cost.
  • If a patron has overdue books, no other books may be checked out until an arrangement is made to return the overdue books.

Renewals

  • Books may be renewed either in person or by telephone.

Holds

  • Best-selling books may be put on reserve for patrons on a first come, first serve basis.

Outreach Service

  • Patrons that are homebound can request outreach service. Staff will deliver books to the patron’s home and then will pick them up when the patron is finished.

Patrons with Sight/Physical Impairment

  • Patrons with sight and physical impairment can request service through the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped branch of the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. Contact the director applications and instructions.

Book Return

  • An after hours book drop is available at the back of the library. Also, a drive thru window is available during regular library hours for returns. It is located on the north side of the library.
